Everyone can learn the ins and outs of skincare. However, designing a perfect and effective skincare routine needs you to choose products that will work without causing any issues. That is why before putting anything on your skin, you need to know your skin type. Today, we will talk about the different skin  and how you can determine yours. Let’s get started.

What are the Different Skin Types?

Normal

Normal skin is that which doesn’t experience frequent breakouts. Those with this skin can quickly introduce new products without worrying about adverse reactions. Such people don’t need regular moisturization. Plus, their skin doesn’t blot oil throughout the day.

This skin type is firm skin with little fine lines and wrinkles. If you are the normal skin type, you probably don’t experience dryness, oiliness, or sensitivity. Therefore, you can adjust well to many ingredients. Thus, one has a wide window of experimenting with different beauty products like masks, moisturizers, cleansers, and toners until they figure out the best products for your skin.

Oily

This skin always appears glowing. Most makeup or skincare products don’t stay well put with this skin. Oily skin individuals are always trying to reduce shine. It has few wrinkles and fine lines. However, you may want to stay away from petrolatum, mineral oil, and alcohol ingredients. Always ensure that the product you’re buying is non-comedogenic as this won’t clog your pores.

Note that you can still moisturize this skin. But, preferably, use an oil-free moisturizer as well as clay masks. Also, avoid washing your face too much as it can dry the pores, which increases the production of oil.

Dry or Dehydrated

Well, dryness and dehydration aren’t exactly similar. However, they share some symptoms. Dryness means that the skin lacks oil. Such skin is flaky, itchy, and cracks easily. Chronic skin conditions like eczema, environmental or lifestyle factors can lead to dryness. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is skin that lacks enough moisture. It feels light and appears like paper, or when you pinch it together, you may notice fine lines.

People with dry skin should try to lock in moisture. Therefore, ensure that you moisturize several times a day, especially when you’ve bathed. Additionally, maintaining warm and moist air is also beneficial to this skin. Also, refrain from using products that contain too much fragrance and citrus oils.

Those with dehydrated skin should buy water-based skincare products. Using oil-based ones can worsen the condition. It’s also essential that you increase your intake of water per day to normalize your skin. Check out our blog, “Tips for Normalizing Real Skin.”

Combination

A combination skin type is one that combines two types of the above skins. It could be dry in some parts and have oily areas. You can quickly identify it by oily T-zone, which is the strip across your forehead and line that extends from the forehead to your nose, while other parts of your face are normal or dry.

You should avoid similar ingredients as someone with oily or dry. That means no using products with alcohol. Balancing should be your priority. Apply spot treatment to problem areas and use toning or balancing creams to make your skin even

Acne-Prone

This skin type experiences regular breakouts or breakouts that don’t go away. A person’s pores clog easily in such cases, which results in whiteheads, pustules, and blackheads. Note that a person can have dry or oily skin and still have acne.

But we should mention that not all blemishes on the skin are acne-related. Research says they may be related to rosacea, also called adult acne, as it presents similar symptoms like acne. Rosacea symptoms include apparent blood vessels, stinging, burning, thickened skin, flushing, etc.

If your skin is acne-prone, aim at using products that are specifically designed for acne treatment. That means that you use cleansers, moisturizers, and exfoliants intended to prevent or reduce breakouts. Additionally, please be gentle when washing your skin or you could worsen existing breakouts. Individuals may also consider using a gel that gets rid of pimples and acne scarring. Some ingredients to look out for include clay, retinol, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc.

Sensitive

Sensitive skin flushes easily, reacts negatively to fragrance, may have rashes, bumps, patches of dry, flaky, and irritated skin, and may sting or burn once you use a skin product. This sensitivity may be caused by genetics, environmental factors, or allergies.

Individuals with this skin type should be extra cautious when buying their cosmetics. Since they are prone to redness, burning, stinging, irritation, or acne breakouts, they should go for mild products. Stay away from alcohol and antibacterial ingredients as they may irritate your skin. Also, consider products with anti-inflammatory, healing, and calming properties.

Mature

Although all our skin ages, the pace is different for different people. That means that the signs might also differ. However, it’s common to spot a wrinkle, some fine lines, and feel drier. Other characters that might be present include sagging, dullness, dehydration, and dark spots.

Mature skin needs enhanced skincare to manage past and future damage. Individuals can design an anti-aging routine filled with restorative products at any anytime. But make sure that the products you are using help boost collagen production while protecting you against cell turnover and environmental aggressors.

Trending Ingredients in Skincare Today

Hyaluronic Acid

If you are suffering from dry skin, few ingredients can help you. One of them is hyaluronic acid that can increase your moisturization level. It’s been used for many years to help hydrate the skin. This acid can help your skin retain moisture, making it soft, smooth, and more valuable.

Tea Tree Oil

We’ve all struggled with acne at some point. If you’re dealing with it right now, you may want to make tea tree oil for your friend. Of course, like any other treatment, it can’t benefit everyone. But, using it may be worth looking into. Tea tree contains antibacterial properties that can help treat acne. It also has other properties that help treat acne scarring.

Squalene

If you want something that can help improve your complexion, squalene is the product to consider. It’s a derivative of human sebum and has many antioxidants that help make the skin soft and flexible. Additionally, it hydrates your skin, keeping it moisturized all through.

CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been making headlines in the health and wellness community for quite some time. And nowadays, even dermatologists recommend it for its various benefits to the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says that it may be used topically to reduce inflammation caused by acne, eczema, and psoriasis because CBD contains inflammatory properties. But more research needs to be done on the benefits of CBD for the skin.

We should also mention that using products with CBD will not make you high as it doesn’t contain psychoactive properties like its counterpart THC. But when starting with CBD products, make sure that you patch test it first to see how your skin reacts to this ingredient. If you don’t have an adverse reaction, apply the product according to its packaging direction.

Vitamin C

Although there are thousands of skincare ingredients, vitamin C continues to be among many experts’ favorite. This vitamin can help fight the damage caused by free radicals that cause premature aging signs like dark spots, wrinkles, fine lines, etc. Apply vitamin C serum in the morning and top it with sunscreen to protect you against free radicals. With time, you’ll have a radiant and smooth face.

Retinol

Well, retinol is not a new product. It’s been used for many years for its anti-aging benefits. It is among the best skincare ingredients. That’s why many products, both new and old, are including this vitamin A derivative in their ingredient list.

But since retinol is potent, you may want to start slow and gradually increase as your skin builds tolerance. Apply two to three drops a week, two times on clean and dry skin during the first week. On week two, you can use it every other night, and on week three, you can use it nightly once you’ve determined that your skin can tolerate it. Stick to night application as retinol can make your skin more sensitive. And don’t forget to apply sunscreen and follow other sun protection measures during the day.

Bakuchiol

We cannot deny the incredible benefits that retinol offers our skin. However, the ingredient is potent, leading to undesirable effects, especially for someone with sensitive skin. Side effects include skin peeling and dryness. Now, other different ways exist that help makes sensitive skin more tolerant to retinol. Some individuals opt to use a retinol alternative called bakuchiol (add a link to the old blog).

This compound is extracted from Psoralea corylifolia plant leaves, and seeds don’t resemble retinoids in any way. But, like retinol, it could help reduce wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation, photodamage, and elasticity. Use it twice a day for at least 12 weeks for impressive results.

Beauty and Skincare Tips from Old Wives Tales

Our mums and grandmas have handed us different skin tips that they claim give us glowing, radiant skin. Although most of us didn’t pay attention to these old tips, now could be the right time you start using them. Let’s look at old wives’ skin tips that truly work wonders on the skin;

Remove Pigmentation with Turmeric

Curcumin is a compound found in turmeric that prevents the production of melanin. Mix turmeric with milk/honey and rose water, then apply it to areas that need lightening. Leave the paste for a few minutes, then wash it off.

Practice Regular Massages for Firm Skin

Massages keep the skin firm by stimulating blood flow. They’re essential for those who are trying to lose weight or are overly active. Well, you may not experience the same effect as that of a lifting procedure. But, they are an excellent long-term preventive measure. And you mustn’t have a reason to massage yourself, considering how good massages feel.

Get Rid of a Tan with Lemons and Honey

Lemon has high amounts of vitamin C that help fade blemishes while brightening the skin. Honey, on the other hand, plumps and hydrates the skin. When mixed with some drops o rose water, the peroxides in honey are activated, causing a safe and light bleaching effect.

Use Tea Bags for Dark Circles

Tea contains antioxidants and tannins that help lighten dark circles under the eye area. Plus, using chilled tea bags can also help get rid of puffiness, brightening tired eyes.

Boost Immunity with Turmeric and Milk

Individuals have used this combination as a cure for flu for years. Thus, it’s become popular in western countries going by the name “turmeric latte.” Turmeric has antioxidants that help boost immunity. Therefore, this ingredient can help you fight the damage caused by free radicals while clearing the flu. It also makes your skin clear, radiant, and bright.

Get Rid of Puffy Eyes Using Cucumbers

Cucumbers are a coolant. Thus, placing them on your eyes can help reducing puffiness. Note that their moisture content is high, making them super hydrating. If your eyes are looking puffed or tired, try reviving them using a cucumber.

What Ingredients Should I Avoid in My Skincare Routine?

Since there are many skincare products in the market, please make sure that you read the product’s ingredient list before using it. Some dangerous ingredients to avoid are;

Aluminum– and other toxic metals can create an estrogen-like effect in our bodies, disrupting our endocrine system’s normal functioning. Aluminum is usually found in antiperspirant deodorants.

DEA, MEA, and TEA– these are clear, colorless liquids that smell like ammonia. They’re primarily found in foaming products like cleansers and soaps. But you can also find them in sunscreens, hair products, eye makeup, and fragrances.

DMDM HYDRANTOIN and UREA– these preservatives release formaldehyde, which can cause headaches, insomnia, skin allergies, etc. Commonly, they are found in skin care and hair care products.

Mineral Oil– it’s a petroleum by-product that hinders the skin’s natural ability to eliminate toxins. As such, this increases the chances of acne and other skin conditions to occur. Mineral oil is found in creams, ointments, lotions, and cosmetics.

Other skin ingredients to avoid are;

  • Parabens
  • Synthetic fragrances
  • Phthalates
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Siloxanes
  • PEG
  • Triclosan
  • Propylene glycol and butylene glycol

Additionally, you may also want to take preventive care measures by avoiding;

  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Too much sun exposure
  • Using the wrong products
  • Not getting enough sleep
  • Drinking too much alcohol

You should also avoid milk and dairy products as they may cause acne in some people and foods with a high glycemic index like chips, alcohol, white bread, etc. We aren’t saying that you cut them entirely from your diet. But, please consume them in moderation. Also, increase your intake of the following foods for clear skin;

  • Fatty fish
  • Broccoli
  • Soy
  • Red grapes

ALL skin types need sunscreen to prevent sunburn and the health-damaging effects of UV rays from the sun.  It doesn’t matter your skin type.  When thinking about sun protection, a common idea is that those with pale skin and light eyes are the people who really need sunscreen to prevent both sun damage and sunburn, while it’s much less important for darker skin tones. But nothing could be further from the truth!

All skin tones must be protected from the sun to prevent damage, with the same protection needed for darker and lighter skin types. In fact, darker skin types are more likely to have the added problem of discoloration or melasma (uneven skin tone). And exposure to the sun can make this worse. Darker skin types need the same UVA and UVB protection as lighter skin types.  Read more about the importance of using sunscreen in our blog, “Can You Get Vitamin D Using SPF?
