Why Sequence is Important

Every skincare product has its benefits. But you’ll need to apply your products correctly for your skin to enjoy their benefits. Remember that your skin’s function is to keep things out. But, we want ingredients of the product we use to get in. However, these ingredients, even with perfect application and formulation, cannot get all in. And worse is when you don’t follow the correct order when applying. It’s why you need to have a sequence from start to finish for you to see great results from your skincare regimen. 

What Sequence Should I Follow? 

You’ve bought your cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and other products. Now, you are wondering which one goes first and which to finish with. Experts advise that you consider consistency during application. Products with the thinnest consistency should go on first, and the thick ones should be applied last. That means you start with liquids, then creams. However, it’s also essential that you begin with those containing the ingredients that you want to get in. For instance, serums with antioxidants should start your regimen. We also recommend finishing with those that you want to sit on top of your skin, like moisturizers containing humectants and emollients. 

Here is How to Apply Skincare Products Step by Step: 

Step 1: Cleanser

Always remove and wash your face first before applying any product. Clean skin allows the ingredients to penetrate quickly and efficiently. Therefore, you’ll need to get rid of oil, dirt, and grime off your face. Many people use makeup wipes. However, they leave a residue that can cause breakouts later on. Instead, use cleansing oil that removes all makeup without harming your skin. Then apply a gentle cleanser, especially if your skin is acne prone. (Double Cleanse)

Step 2: Toning 

Toners back in the day had a reputation of irritating and stinging your skin. However, manufacturers of today have created gentle and hydrating products to prevent dryness and treat acne. As such, they don’t feel heavy on your skin. These products help prime your face to absorb ingredients later on. However, toning is optional, like with most other steps in this guide. The best toners are; 

Ancient Minerals Calendula Toner– contains powerful antioxidants that prevent aging signs and balances the pH of your skin while soothing it. 

Adama Minerals Cucumber Toner– it’s designed for combination skin to help restore pH levels, soothe the skin, and give an even complexion.

Toners should come in as a second step. But, they can be interchanged with essences. Therefore, if you don’t want to use a toner opt for an essence instead in this second step. 

However, remember that there are many skin toners today. It’s why you should find the best product for your skin. We recommend buying a toner that has either alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) like lactic or glycolic acid or one with beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) like salicylic acids. These acids help unclog pores, remove blackheads and prevent breakouts. If your skin is oily, use a BHA toner, while dry skins work best with an AHA toner. 

Once you’ve cleansed your skin, tap your toner with a cotton ball every night. But if you’re using retinol at night, use the toner in the morning and give it a few minutes to dry before you apply other products. This prevents acids from being neutralized before your skin reaps their benefits.

For those with other skin types, you can buy a hydrating toner, a pH balancing toner, etc., depending on the condition you want to address. Simply tap it in the morning or at night after cleansing. 

Step 3: Serum 

Serums are essential products in skincare. They are packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and hydration that heals and protects your skin. Most of us don’t use serums. However, they’re vital in your skincare routine. 

Although they’re optional, we don’t recommend skipping them as they help level up your skincare routine. You can use Zion Health Vitamin C Serum in the morning. It contains antioxidants that will help protect you from inflammation that results from free radicals. This Anti-aging remedy will also brighten and lighten your skin with regular use. However, note that it can be a bit strong for sensitive skin. Therefore, don’t use it every day if you have this skin type. 

When choosing a serum, consider one with hyaluronic acid as it helps preserve moisture keeping your skin hydrated. Note that some acne and anti-aging products can dry your skin, leading to irritation. Therefore, using such a serum will provide your skin with the moisture it needs.

It deeply penetrates your skin so that you can enjoy its high potency. The product doesn’t contain any diluting fillers, which means it is efficient and safe to use. The retinoic acid in this product doesn’t need any conversion process to work on the skin, meaning you can start enjoying the benefits as soon as you apply.

Step 4: Eye Creams

Unlike face moisturizers, eye creams are thinner and lighter. As such, they are to be applied before moisturizing your face. Like we’ve already said, thin and lighter products should be applied before heavy products since they can’t penetrate through thick products.

Well, eye creams are used as anti-aging products. However, most people don’t need them. If you’re using a moisturizer and sunscreen, you are already caring for the eye area. But if you still want to use eye cream, here is our recommendation. 

Try using and cream with a rollerball applicator if you’ll apply it in the morning. The rollerball applicator helps retain fluid, especially for creams that are stored in the fridge to be used in between intervals. Also, opt for a product with caffeine formulation as it helps tighten puffy eyes under 20 minutes. 

Most people are under the impression that their night eye cream needs to contain some retinol as it helps with the eye area. However, because the eye area is sensitive, a product can easily irritate it or cause rashes. You should, therefore, invest in a gentle product containing hydrating properties. This will repair the skin’s barrier during the night while protecting your under-eye. 

Note that we are not against using retinol under the eyes. However, we think it’s best when retinoids are applied to the whole face rather than parts of it. 

Step 5: Spot Treatments 

Spot treatments, whether for dark spots, scars or zits should be applied at night, since it’s the time that your body is putting more effort into repairing itself. However, for those who’ve already used an acne toner and are planning to use a retinol, spot treating is advised in the morning to prevent skin irritations. But whether you spot treat at night or in the morning, ensure that you do this step before moisturizing to allow the treatment to penetrate easily through the skin, without having to battle another barrier first. 

Spot treatments with hydroquinone are advised for those with acne scars or dark spots. But, this ingredient can be irritating to someone with sensitive skin. Also, opt for once with niacinamide (vitamin B3) as it helps brighten marks and scars with regular use. You can use niacinamide daily as it’s less likely to irritate. But hydroquinone should be used once after three days to first observe how you react to it. 

Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid work best for pimples. However, avoid using them together as they can cause irritations. Benzoyl peroxide is mostly used for whiteheads as it kills the bacteria causing acne. Salicylic acid, on the other hand, is best for inflamed skin and clogged pores as it dissolves oil and skin cells, allowing your skin to breathe. 

Whether you spot treat at night or in the morning, the application process is similar. Only dab a little to the area(s) that you want to treat and let it dry for a minute or so. Then, apply your moisturizer on that spot first to prevent wiping the treatment. However, cover your face first before doing this.

Step 6: Moisturizer

Moisturizing your skin is not negotiable. You should do it twice a daily whether your skin is oily, dry, broken, etc. Moisturizing keeps your skin healthy by hydrating it and making the products you’ve already applied more effective. 

Your day cream should contain hyaluronic acid that keeps your skin moisturized without being greasy or too heavy. Also, it should include sun protection features of SPF at least 30. This is important, especially if you’re planning to use sunscreen. No matter your moisturizer, allow it to sink in for at least 5 minutes, then you can apply makeup if you are not planning to apply anything else. 

At night, use a moisturizer with the things that your body produces naturally so that it can get more of them. Note that during the night is the time for our body to repair itself. Therefore, it works hard to fix damages while boosting regeneration. Thus, a product with lipids, proteins, and hyaluronic acid will work best. You can also decide to use an anti-aging cream with a minimal dosage of retinoids as it is mild, especially to sensitive skin. Here are our top best moisturizers.

Step 7: Retinol 

Retinoids simply refer to vitamin A derivatives. They help improve cell turnover. As a result, you’ll have clear, smoother, youthful skin with time. However, it’ll take about four to six months to observe results. But, with consistent use, results are guaranteed. 

As they trigger collagen production, these products can help fade spots and acne scars while unclogging pores and preventing breakouts. 

If it’s your first time using them, make sure that you start slow then gradually adjust while observing how your skin reacts. Start with a pea-size for the first one week, applying only once a week. Then move to twice a week for two weeks and thrice a week for three weeks, then every other night. 

However, for those using a night cream containing retinoids, this step is not necessary. Note that using more retinoids will not fasten the results and can cause inflammation. Also, if your skin is extra sensitive, the first start by applying your moisturizer and let it sit for 10 minutes then you can apply retinol. This will prevent irritation and dilution of the product. 

Step 8: Oils 

Face oils are for sealing your ingredients. They prevent moisture and all other ingredients from evaporating quickly. But, you can’t rely on them alone to moisturize your skin. Instead, use them over other products to make your routine more efficient. ALWAYS apply your oils last. Note that they can penetrate through serums, treatments, and moisturizers easily. But other products can’t penetrate through them. Also, it’s a common misconception that oils are for dry skin. However, some oils like jojoba and rosehip help reduce excess oil in acne-prone skin, and others like aloe and marula can help soothe easily irritated skin. 

Step 9: Sunscreen 

Okay, we said oil should be applied last. But technically, sunscreens come last. Note that oils still help treat your skin. So, they should be last in your routine as they still need to penetrate. But sunscreen does not penetrate anywhere. It simply a weapon against the sun. Therefore, it does not add anything but rather protects. The bare sunscreen protection level is SPF 30. Thus, even if your foundation contains SPF 15, you still need to apply sunscreen to prevent premature aging, worsened acne scars, or even skin cancer.

Skincare Ingredients and When to Use Them

The time you use your products affects their outcomes. When you use a product at the wrong time not only can it make you age quickly but can also cause other negative reactions. The following ingredients should only be used at night. 

Vitamin A- while it fights sun damage, it shouldn’t be used during the day as it’ll put your skin at risk of sun damage. 

AHAs and BHAs- these exfoliants help remove dead cells by dissolving the glue holding them together. As a result, you’ll have bright, soft, wrinkle-free, and smooth skin. Apart from cleansing the skin, AHAs also help in hydration and collagen production. On the other hand, BHAs help clear skin blemishes and breakouts. However, note that when you remove dead cells, you are thinning your skin. Thus, when the sun’s rays hit you, the skin won’t be protected. As a result, redness and wrinkles can appear. 

Some Essential Oils- essential oils are made up of many different compounds. Some compounds give them soothing, hydrating, and anti-aging properties. However, some aren’t that good. As they’re the ones plants use to protect them from aggressors. Well, we can’t say that all essential oils are bad. However, as some may irritate, it’s best to use them at night. Essential oils containing 5-methoxypsolaren and bergapten should specifically be used at night. Note that they can magnify the effects of UV rays, exposing your skin to a high risk of sun damage. However, not all essential oils do this. Avoid lime, lemon, grapefruit, bitter orange, and begarmont oils. If you must use them, strictly use them at night. 

Vitamin C- vitamin C and be used during the day and at night depending on your preference. It contains many antioxidants that help keep the skin healthy though destroying free radicals, boosting the production of collagen, and brightening the skin. This ingredient comes in many forms. However, because it is exfoliating, it can make your skin to be more prone to sun damage. It’s why some women incorporate it into their nighttime skincare routine. However, some argue that it should be used during the day alongside vitamin E and ferulic acid as together, they boost the efficiency of one another and magnify the protection from your sunscreen. 

What Ingredients Shouldn’t I Mix? 

After choosing the right products for your skin, the next important thing to do is mix them correctly so that they complement each other. Mixing ingredients correctly can be a waste of money, and they can interact negatively, causing an adverse reaction. Don’t mix;
